When They Can't Tell Us Where It Hurts
Whether you've been told, "There's nothing wrong," or you're still searching for answers, don't lose hope.
One of the greatest privileges of what I do isn't making products.
It's listening.
This week alone I spoke with several wonderful ladies, all desperately trying to do the very best for the horses and dogs they love. Different breeds. Different disciplines. Different parts of the country. Yet every conversation seemed to come back to the same place.
Pain.
Not always the kind you can see.
The horse that suddenly starts rearing.
The one that bites when you tighten the girth.
The horse that bucks without warning.
The one that sweats excessively while standing quietly in the stall under a fan... or doesn't sweat at all on the hottest day of the year.
The horse whose coat loses its shine and begins to tell a story long before bloodwork ever does.
The dog who chews at its feet until they're raw or scratches until they bleed.
The dog that never quite seems comfortable in its own skin.
People often see the behaviour.
Owners see the worry.
Because deep down, every loving owner asks the same question...
"What if they're trying to tell me something?"
Our horses and dogs don't speak English.
They speak through their behaviour.
Sometimes they whisper.
Sometimes they scream.
As owners, all we can do is keep listening.
I've spent most of my life around animals, and if there's one thing they've taught me, it's this: behaviour is often communication. Sometimes it's training. Sometimes it's management. Sometimes it's injury. And sometimes the body is quietly crying out for help from the inside.
That's why I never start with a product.
I start with a conversation.
I ask questions.
What changed? Are there any underlying health issues?
When did it start? Was there an injury, illness or another stressful event?
What are they eating? Have you noticed any food sensitivities or allergies?
What does their day look like? Are they working comfortably? How much turnout do they get? How much time do you spend grooming them?
What else have you tried? What does your veterinarian think? Have any tests been done yet?
Sometimes, together, we uncover something simple that changes everything.
Sometimes we don't.
Those are the cases that stay with me.
I won't pretend we have all the answers, because we don't.
There are still horses and dogs that keep me awake at night because I wonder if there was one more question I could have asked or one more avenue we could have explored together.
But I will never stop trying.
Because behind every phone call, every message and every email is someone who loves their animal enough to keep searching.
And that deserves respect.
If you're reading this today while worrying about your horse or your dog, please know this:
You are not alone.
Whether you've been told, "There's nothing wrong," or you're still searching for answers, don't lose hope.
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough starts with someone simply listening.
If that's all I can offer you today, then that's where we'll begin.
Because every horse, every dog and every owner deserves to be heard.
My hope is that we can have an honest, respectful conversation. Tell me your story. It may help someone else who's walking the same road, and together we might even find another piece of the puzzle for your horse or dog's health.
As we travel this journey together, as always...
Be Kind. Be the person you needed when you were starting out.
